Teams are already trying to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, but today in Africa, a huge win for Ghana may be wiped out due to a national struggle with the power company.
With Ghana up 4-0 over Lesotho in the second half at the Accra Sports Stadium, the stadium lights cut out, and stadium technicians are scrambling to fix the problem before the match is abandoned.
Reliable power is a constant worry for Ghanaians, and the Regional Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana — the company that supplies power to the stadium — was instantly fired after the lights went out, according to African site JoyOnline.
A government spokesman doled out this harsh warning for the company:
"President [John Atta] Mills is upset and everybody who has a role to play in the matter will have their heads roll."
The team was given an hour after the lights went dark to fix the problem, otherwise the game will have to be replayed from the beginning.
UPDATE: The lights just came back on, just 10 minutes from the deadline set by referees. Nearly all the fans in the stadium had left, but they are now starting to trickle back in.
