Bill Maher bought a minority stake in the New York Mets, he announced last night at Citi Field.
He wouldn't say how large the stake is, or how much he paid.
Earlier this year the Mets announced a plan to raise $240 million by selling minority 4% stakes to 12 different investors. It's unclear if Maher bought one of the full $20-million shares on his own or with a group of investors.
Maher grew up in northern New Jersey, and say he's a life-long Mets fan.
Here's what he told the New York Times about the deal:
“I think it’s a great investment. I just thought it would be a great place, especially after I’ve seen some of the ways money can disappear in recent years. I had my money in Lehman Brothers in 2008.”
Baseball is stocking up on famous minority owners right now.
Magic Johnson is the face of the new ownership group of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Nolan Ryan bought a slice of the Texas Rangers a few years ago.
