The triathlon is one of the most physically demanding events at the Olympic Games, requiring athletes to swim 1,500 meters, bike 24.9 miles and run 6.2 miles.
The event was first added to the Olympic lineup in 2000, and Canadian Simon Whitfield has already won two medals in the event — including the gold at Sydney.
This video from Specialized takes viewers through an average day of training for Whitfield, who at 37 years old will be competing in his fourth Olympics in London.
Whitfield sneaks out of bed at 5:15 a.m., trying not to wake his kids and endure the "wrath of his wife."
He then heads to meet with a training group for an early-morning 100 kilometer ride.
On this particular day, Whitfield focused on speed drills.
