A number of New York athletes run charities that don't live up to their promises and merely provide tax breaks, according to a New York Post investigation (via Deadspin).
The investigation by the Post found the following:
- New York Jets defensive lineman D'Brickashaw Ferguson's charity pays his mother more money (~$90,000) to run the "nonprofit" than it doles out in donations to needy students who want to go to college (~$32,000)
- New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia's charity had to take out a $32,000 car loan despite CC's exorbitant $23 million contract
- Jets linebacker Aaron Maybin has a charity to supposedly help poor kids and takes donations through his website that are said to be "tax-deductible," but the charity is listed as a for-profit company (Aaron Maybin LLC)
When asked to comment on the findings, charity spokespeople basically beat around the bush and said they would "look into it."
