A Double-Amputee Competed In The Olympics Today And It Was A Resounding Success

Oscar Pistorius, a South African sprinter who needed a court ruling and a spot as an alternate just to make the Olympic team, became the first double-amputee to compete in the Summer Olympics. And he ran really fast.

Running in the first heat for the Men's 400 meters, Pistorius finished second, advancing to tomorrow's semifinals.

Pistorius, who had both of his legs amputated below the knee when he was a child, was ruled eligible to compete by a court ruling in 2008, but needed to be added to the team as a member of South Africa's 4x400m relay squad after failing to qualify.
