It was an amazing morning for British brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, who won gold and bronze, respectively, on home soil in the triathlon.

The two were big favorites going into the event, but at the 1:38:23 mark, things got dicey for Jonathan, who is the younger of the two Brownlees.

With a little more than a mile and a half to go, Jonathan had to take a 15-second penalty while his brother grew his lead:

Jonathan mounted his bicycle too quickly after the swimming portion of the event. He could have entered the penalty box at any time during the run, but he took the penalty with just a few minutes left:

Jonathan was comfortably in third place when he entered the box. The only athletes who could have caught him were these two Frenchmen:

But Jonathan had a 25 second led on the chase group, even after the penalty, and the 15-second rest let him cruise to the finish line:

Alistair, meanwhile, was way out in front. In the final meters, he grabbed a flag from the crowd:

He walked over the finish line in 1:46:25 to win gold:

31 seconds later, Jonathan joined him at the finish line, and the Olympic medalists, brothers, and roommates joined in a hug:
