American Aly Raisman won the bronze medal today in the individual balance beam event, but only after the judges reviewed her routine and raised her score to the bronze medal position.
Raisman, who was the last gymnast to go, was originally scored in fourth with a 14.966 behind Catalina Ponor of Romania, who had a 15.066.
Team USA contested the score on the basis that the judges didn't award Raisman the full difficulty level that she performed, and after review, Raisman's score was raised a tenth of a point. She won the bronze on a tiebreaker over Ponor.
Here's how it all happened. Raisman was the last gymnast to go in the group, and nailed her routine with just a few minor wobbles.
Gabby Douglas had already fallen off the beam during her routine, meaning Raisman was the only chance the United States had at a medal.
The judges scored her in fourth place, though, giving the gold to Deng Linlin of China, the silver to Sui Lu of China, and the bronze to Catalina Ponor of Romania.
Team USA filed an inquiry to the judges for a review of Raisman's score, believing it was too low.
Raisman and Ponor had to stand around and anxiously wait.
The judges watched the routine again, trying to decide if the difficulty was higher than what was originally awarded.
Raisman was awarded an extra tenth of a point, enough to tie with Ponor with a score of 15.066. Raisman won the tiebreaker due to a higher difficulty score, and earned the bronze medal.
