With the announcement of the 2012 BCS Bowl matchups, much of the focus has been on the inclusion of 15th-ranked Northern Illinois, 21st-ranked Louisville, and unranked Wisconsin. The result is the worst collection of teams in the 15 year history of the BCS.
Below is a look at the average ranking for the teams that played in the BCS Bowl games*. This year's average ranking of 9.5 is the worst in BCS history. This marks the third straight decline in BCS quality since 2009, the only year in which the top ten teams all played in BCS bowl games...
* For purposes of these calculations, teams that were unranked were given a ranking of no. 26; The BCS expanded from four games to five in 2006.
