The most shocking part of Tim Tebow's disastrous 2012 season was the extent to which he was totally irrelevant.
He barely played.
Of all the things that you could have predicted for Tebow coming into the year, him playing no role whatsoever seemed like one of the most unlikely.
He finished the year with 39 passing yards on eight passing attempts.
To give you an idea of how little that is, three non-QBs threw for more than 39 yards this year, and one of them was a punter (stats via Pro Football Reference):
- Bengals WR Mohamed Sanu: 1/1 for 73 yards
- Rams punter John Hekker: 3/3 for 42 yards
- Jets WR Jeremy Kerley: 1/1 for 42 yards
We aren't trying to be cruel here.
We're just pointing out that Tebow's relevance to the Jets at QB this year was roughly equivalent to John Hekker's relevance to the Rams at QB.
That makes the trade for him last spring all the more confusing. Why bring in a guy to much fanfare and then not even make an attempt to use him?
