FORE! The World's Most Important Collection Of Golf Memorabilia Is About To Hit The Auction Block

the golfersJaime Ortiz-Patiño, the founder of the world-famous Valderrama Golf Club in Spain, is auctioning off his private golf art collection, which took him 25 years to acquire, May 30 at Christie's in London. 

The collection depicts notable personalities, from the sport's earliest references in the 15th century to a program for the inaugural Masters Tournament in 1934.

The most famous painting in the history of golf, "The Golfers," a preparatory oil painting by Charles Lees, R.S.A. (1800-1880), is featured in the collection, along with "The Golf Course" by Sir John Lavery, which depicts a green in North Berwick.

The Morris Putter is another highlight in the sale. The hand-crafted apple and pear wood putter, owned by two famous golfersOld Tom Morris and his son Young Tom Morrisis estimated to sell for between $63,000 and $112,000.

The 400 lots of historic clubs, balls, and art are expected to raise nearly $3.2 million.

This mahogany ballot box from the 19th century is expected to sell for between $2,400 and $4,000.



A pine-cased box from the late 19th century is estimated at $1,500 to $2,400.



"The Golf Course," by Sir John Lavery, one of the most famous paintings in golf, is estimated to sell for $320,000 to $480,000.
