Landon Donovan has once again been loaned to Everton in the English Premier League (via The Daily Mail). And while the loan is only for ten weeks starting in January, there is reason to wonder if this time, Donovan will finally make the move permanent.
Donovan was previously loaned to Everton in 2010, appearing in ten matches and scoring a pair of goals and instantly becoming a fan favorite.
In the past, MLS commissioner Don Garber has resisted overtures for Donovan to transfer to Everton permanently,noting that "contributions that [Donovan] makes are invaluable to our future success."
However, this time Everton is in a spending mood, and the health of MLS is better than ever. The league may no longer be dependent on Donovan's popularity.
MLS needs star-power here. But they also need success in Europe to gain respect. It will be interesting to see how the league balances the two with Donovan.
