With the NBA's March 15 trade deadline only a few days away, all anyone can talk about lately is potential trades involving the likes of Dwight Howard or Rajon Rondo.
There should be plenty of activity the next two weeks, since a solid two-thirds of the league is realistically in the playoff hunt.
Sometimes mid-season trades for All-Stars work out, a la Pau Gasol to the Lakers a few years back.
Other times, they don't really help. (See: Payton, Gary to Milwaukee in 2003.)
SUCCESS: Houston Rockets got Clyde Drexler from Portland in 1995. Clyde the Glide and Hakeem Olajuwon beat Orlando for the NBA title that year.
SUCCESS: Miami Heat acquired Tim Hardaway from the Golden State Warriors in 1996. He and Alonzo Mourning teamed up for numerous playoff runs to end the 90s.
FAILURE: Seattle Supersonics traded Gary Payton to the Milwaukee Bucks for Ray Allen in 2003. Payton only stuck around through the end of that season, which ended in a first round playoff loss for the Bucks.
