Usain Bolt declares himself ready for the World Championships after shaky 2015

London (AFP) — Usain Bolt insisted Thursday he would be ready for the challenge of toppling the in-form American Justin Gatlin at the World Championships in Beijing next month.

The Jamaican track king made the pledge on the eve of his return from injury in the 100m on the opening night of the Anniversary Games Diamond League meeting in London on Friday.

Bolt has not raced since winning the New York Diamond League 200m race on June 13 because of a pelvic problem.

The world record holder at 100m and 200m also said that he had "a problem" with Gatlin's United States team-mate Tyson Gay about his doping past but not with Gatlin, who has served two doping suspensions and who has run the four fastest times of 2015 at both 100m and 200m.

Asked whether he had lost respect with rivals who had failed drugs tests in their sprinting careers, the 28-year-old Jamaican replied: "The only person I really had a problem with was Tyson.

"The reason is I competed with Tyson throughout the years and I had so much respect for him. I looked at him as one of the greatest competitors I competed against. He was dedicated. He worked hard.

"When it happened (Gay tested positive for anabolic steroids in 2013 and served a one year ban) I was really disappointed. That really hurt me."

Asked why he did not have a similar problem with Gatlin, Bolt said: "It was before my time. I’m not saying it was right what he did but because me and Tyson competed so closely that hurt."

Gatlin has run 9.74sec for 100m this year and Bolt a modest 10.12sec in his only race at the distance in 2012 – in Rio de Janeiro in April.

However, the Jamaican maintained he was not daunted by the prospect of facing the US sprinter when he defends his World Championship 100m and 200m titles in Beijing, despite his lack of form and lack of competition this year.

 - 'I'm confident' -

"I never doubt myself," he said. "I look forward to competition. Beijing is a month away I'm not worried about that. I'm trying to take it a step at a time.

"I've got two races tomorrow. I've been training really hard. I’ve been pushing myself, so it's all about execution now. If I can execute right and get everything right, I know I'll run fast. It just takes one run to get to 9.7. I'm not worried about times.

"If my coach is not worried, I'm never worried, because he always finds a way to get me ready for the championships. He’s confident I can be ready. I'm confident and all you do is just work.

"I've been doing good in training. Everything's been going better. Hopefully I can go on the track and deliver."

Asked whether a win for Gatlin in Beijing would be bad for the sport, Bolt laughed and replied: "I'm not planning to lose, so I can't really answer that question."

On the subject of being regarded as being the saviour of a drugs-tainted sport, he said: "I know people have been saying that but I don’t think it's only me.

"All athletes have the right to try and help the sport, to keep the sport in a good light. I think it's all our responsibility.

"I just do my best and try to run fast. I do it clean and I think that's what I have to continue doing. I'm not going to say I'm the only saviour of athletics but I just try to do my best to stay focused on the goal I have.

"Hopefully, athletes coming up can learn that I did it clean, with hard work and dedication, so I set an example for the young guys coming up."

PGA Tour golfer fires his caddie in the middle of round and has a fan carry his bag

Robert Allenby

Veteran PGA Tour golfer Robert Allenby is once again making headlines for something other than his golf scores after firing his caddie in the middle of the first round at the RBC Canadian Open, as first reported by ScoreGolf.com.

Allenby said after the round that he fired his caddie, Mick Middlemo, after he had completed nine holes following a verbal confrontation on the course. A fan standing nearby heard Allenby talking to a course official and volunteered to carry Allenby's bag, and the golfer agreed.

According to Allenby, the confrontation came after he and his caddie disagreed on a club choice on the approach to the par-5 13th hole, his fourth hole of the day. Due to an earlier penalty, Allenby was already hitting his fourth shot on the hole and the approach, using the club suggested by the caddie, ended up in a creek.

“I said to him, ‘You know this happens every week. This has happened for like the last three or four or five months,” Allenby said after the round via Score Golf. "We keep making bad mistakes and you’re not helping me in these circumstances.’ And he just lost the plot at me. He just told me I could go eff myself. And I said, ‘Look, you need to slow down. I mean just calm down.’ And then he just got right in my face as if he wanted to just beat me up. I said, ‘Stop being a such and such and calm down and get back into the game.’ And he just got even closer and closer and I just said, 'That’s it, you’re sacked.' I said, ‘I will never have you caddie ever again.’ And we never spoke for the rest of the (first nine) and when we got to 18 we walked off and he said some smart-ass remark to me and I said, ‘You don’t deserve to be caddying out there.’ And he just got right in my face and threatened me so I said, ‘Go.’ So he left.”

In an interview with ESPN, Middlemo did not deny the confrontation but claims he was reacting to Allenby calling him a “fat (expletive).”

“[Allenby] said. 'I can't believe this fat (expletive)' loud enough for everyone to hear,” Middlemo told ESPN. “There's a lot as a caddie I can take but [not] a personal attack like that. I can take it if you call me the worst caddie in the world, tell me I'm horrible at picking clubs, but there's a line you just can't cross.”

According to Score Golf, fans who witnessed the confrontation say Allenby was equally aggressive.

The fan, Tom Fraser, told Global News that he didn't do much to try and assist Allenby and got a lot of help from the other caddies in the group on where to stand and lay the bag. Allenby even raked his own bunker in one instance.

Tom Fraser

Allenby went on to shoot 81 in the opening round but withdrew afterward.

Allenby made headlines earlier this year when he claimed to have been kidnapped following a round at a tournament in Hawaii. Witnesses later came forward to dispute that report.

WWE fires Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan has been fired from the WWE, the company announced Friday morning.

It comes after his profile page was abruptly removed from WWE.com and his merchandise was taken out of the online shop late Thursday night.

The WWE put out a statement suggesting the firing had to do with unspecified offensive comments made by Hogan:

WWE terminated its contract with Terry Bollea (aka Hulk Hogan). WWE is committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds as demonstrated by the diversity of our employees, performers and fans worldwide.

After references to Hogan were scrubbed from the WWE website, there was widespread speculation it had to do with the imminent release of an audio recording on which Hogan reportedly could be heard making racist comments.

RadarOnline, along with the tabloid The National Enquirer, reported on Friday that Hogan was caught "spewing foul-mouthed racial slurs — including the N-word" on an unauthorized sex tape. The comments came in a conversation with a woman about his daughter's music career and personal life, according to Radar.

In a statement to People, Hogan acknowledged that he used the racist language "eight years ago" (via THR):

"Eight years ago I used offensive language during a conversation. It was unacceptable for me to have used that offensive language; there is no excuse for it; and I apologize for having done it."

"This is not who I am. I believe very strongly that every person in the world is important and should not be treated differently based on race, gender, orientation, religious beliefs or otherwise. I am disappointed with myself that I used language that is offensive and inconsistent with my own beliefs."

The wrestling star is suing Gawker Media after it published parts of a leaked sex tape in 2012. It is unclear whether the Gawker tape is related to the alleged racist audiotape. According to Radar, the woman in the alleged racist tape is the same woman from the video published on Gawker.

On Thursday night, Hogan put out this cryptic tweet:

Pro Wrestling Torch's Wade Keller notes that Hogan is also no longer listed as a judge for the show "Tough Enough."

Here's what Hogan's biography page looks like:

NBA veteran explains why the 'small ball' craze is taking over the NBA

$

jared dudley

"Small ball" has become the biggest craze in the NBA.

Teams have started realizing that taking a wing player or forward and sliding them up one position gives the offense extra space, spreads a defense thin, and potentially allows for more versatility on defense.

Though the style has been around for a few years, the Golden State Warriors perhaps best popularized the movement last season when they played 6'6" Draymond Green at power forward and center and rode the style to a championship.

Jared Dudley, an eight-year NBA veteran now on the Washington Wizards, went on Zach Lowe's podcast "The Lowe Post" and discussed more teams switching to small ball, noting "Draymond Green is the blueprint. Is he unique? Yes. But it can be done, and maybe us [power forwards] can't do it as long as he can, but you can do spot minutes."

Dudley, though he's just 6'7", has gradually moved to power forward, or the "four" in small-ball lineups, creating space on offense and using his versatility to defend bigger players or switch onto guards when necessary.

Few teams commit entirely to small ball, using it more as a weapon in spot minutes, as Dudley notes. However, there are numerous benefits on offense, particularly for the players who slide up a position and suddenly have an athletic advantage over bigger opponents.

Dudley explained to Lowe that seeing Green benefit from the open space he received next to Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson encouraged him to embrace small-ball.

"He's going to get the ball in pick-and-rolls in space," Dudley explained. "So he's getting the ball, coming downhill, open threes, he's a great passer, he's got a great feel for the game. And I saw that, and that made me wanna play a little four."

"And my success, my three-point percentage went up when I went to the four. I mean, you get more wide open shots. Let's just be honest, bigs are not as smart as wings when it comes to defensively. They're lazier... they get tired faster. That's a fact. So, I mean, would you wanna have LeBron guard you, or would you wanna have Kevin Love guard you? Would you wanna have DeMarre Carroll guard you or Paul Millsap guard you?"

The bigger question for small-ball comes defensively. Though the traditional, low-post, physical big man is rare, some people wonder whether it's more physically taxing to put a smaller player at power forward or center where they may face true centers.

Lowe noted that last season in the playoffs, the Bucks, Dudley's former team, went small against the Chicago Bulls and put a smaller player on Joakim Noah, who isn't an offensive threat. Dudley told Lowe that the physical demand of playing against a bigger player is legitimate.

"Yes, there definitely is. 100%," Dudley said. "Noah is gonna bang you. He's going to keep coming to the boards, he's going to hit you in your back, he's going to put pressure on you."

Dudley noted that Paul George of the Indiana Pacers, a traditional small forward who will be asked to play power forward this season, will feel the physicality of playing up, saying, "It will be taxing to his body because they're going to bang him. He's going to have to box out every possession, because every four is going to rebound on him."

Not every team has embraced small ball, and much of it still has to do with roster fit. Teams like the Bulls still thrive with two traditional big men, and in some cases, size still plays to a team's advantage.

However, teams are beginning to flock to the movement. Versatile players who can slide up and play another position have become the biggest demand in the league, and after the Warriors demonstrated how deadly of a weapon going small can be, this coming NBA season could see the craze hit new heights.

FIFA hasn't signed any new 2018 World Cup sponsors since the corruption scandal exploded

$

fifa 2018 world cupST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — The FIFA corruption crisis is hurting its search for new World Cup sponsors.

Targeting almost $6 billion in revenue from the 2018 tournament, FIFA has not signed any new sponsors since last year's World Cup in Brazil.

"Definitely the current situation does not help to finalize any new agreement. That is a fact," FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said Friday ahead of this weekend's qualifying draw.

The first big event for host Russia has brought hundreds of international media to St. Petersburg, offering a natural stage for a sponsorship launch. However, Valcke said no major deals would be completed until FIFA's future is clearer — after Sepp Blatter is replaced as president next year.

"I'm sure until the (presidential) election, until the 26th of February, there will not be major announcements," Valcke said, adding that "at least two major companies" have been in negotiatons.

Amid growing frustration with FIFA since May 27, when American and Swiss federal investigations of alleged bribery and money-laundering were revealed, current sponsors have asked to meet with FIFA management.

FIFA received a letter from sponsors this week and will organize a briefing in August by its lawyers and marketing officials, Valcke said.

Valcke spoke at a news conference hours after Visa said FIFA's responses to the recent crisis were "wholly inadequate."

"We believe no meaningful progress can be made under FIFA's existing leadership," the United States-based credit card company said Thursday.

Long-time FIFA backer Coca-Cola and second-tier sponsor McDonald's have also broken ranks from their traditional loyalty by criticizing the football body's handling of bribery allegations. Two of FIFA's eight vice presidents were among 14 soccer and marketing officials indicted in the United States in May.

Blatter and Valcke are expected targets in the U.S. Department of Justice's case.

FIFA's slate of current World Cup sponsors is looking thin as its seeks to fill 34 available slots for two-tournament packages taking in the 2018 event in Russia and the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

Two top-tier sponsors, Dubai-based airline Emirates and Sony, were among several commercial partners who did not renew last year.

Only seven of 14 available positions in FIFA's top two commercial categories have been filled, and none of the 20 slots in a new regional category designed to increase revenue from the 2010-2014 tournament cycle.

FIFA earned $1.63 billion in marketing revenue tied to the 2014 tournament in Brazil. Its total "event-related revenue" in that four-year commercial period was more than $5.1 billion, the governing body's accounts showed in March.

Valcke said the 2018 tournament should be worth more and insisted FIFA was not behind schedule in signing deals to meet its revenue targets.

"No, it's not too late as long as we are doing it in the early part of 2016," the French official said.

With some sponsors committed to other big events in 2016 — such as the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and the European Championship — promotional campaigns tied to the 2018 World Cup would typically start after they are finished, Valcke said.

Blatter's right-hand man since 2007 is unlikely to clinch the new contracts. FIFA rules require the president to propose appointing a secretary general and a new leader elected in February will want to choose his own person, Valcke said.

NFL POWER RANKINGS: Where all 32 teams stand going into training camp

$
0
0

russell wilson

The NFL season is back!

On the eve of NFL training camps, which begin across the league next week, we put together our first NFL power rankings of the 2015 season.

To make the rankings, we took into account last season's DVOA (an advanced stat from Football Outsiders), roster moves, draft picks, and age.

The top of the rankings will look familiar, but we threw some sleepers we like into the top-10 to mix it up.

1. Seattle Seahawks

2014 DVOA rank: 1st

Key additions: Jimmy Graham (TE), Cary Williams (CB)

Key subtractions: Byron Maxwell (CB), James Carpenter (OL), O'Brien Schofield (LB), Max Unger (C)

One thing to know: The Seahawks addressed their biggest weakness in the Jimmy Graham trade, but they had to sacrifice depth to do so.

2. Green Bay Packers

2014 DVOA rank: 3rd

Key additions: Damarious Randall (rookie, DB)

Key subtractions: Tramon Williams (CB), AJ Hawk (LB)

One thing to know: Don't read too much into their lack of key additions. The Packers never sign free agents, and it has been a wildly effective strategy.

3. New England Patriots

2014 DVOA rank: 4th

Key additions: Brandon Gibson (WR), Malcom Brown (rookie, DT)

Key subtractions: Darrelle Revis (CB), Vince Wilfork (DT), Shane Vereen (RB), Kyle Arrington (CB), Tom Brady for four games? (QB)

One thing to know: Bill Belichick's off-seasons always look like head-scratchers and end up turning out fine, but this one might be different with Tom Brady's status uncertain.

Brooke (Hogan) Bollea came to her father's defense on Facebook in a poetic status update. The poem titled, "If you knew my father" is about what she says her dad really believes.

"If you knew my father, you know how hard he fought...and the way it brought a smile to people light, medium and dark," Hogan writes.

NFL player cancels 'females-only' party after Instagram invitation completely backfires

LeSean McCoy says the internet ruined his party.

Last Thursday, the Buffalo Bills' new running back posted an Instagram invitation to a private party, specifying that it was "females only" and a 21-and-over event. Guests would have to RSVP to the private email.

lesean mccoy party

Things got worse when Pennsylvania-based reporter Anna Orso posted the confirmation email she received when she RSVP'd.

There are a few rules, according to the email.

  • Guests must provide a picture and their social media handles (presumably for more pictures).
  • Guests must sign a confidentiality agreement.
  • No +1's!
  • Guests will receive pick-up and drop-off location information and attire in the confirmation email.

News that an NFL running back was hosting a private "females-only" party that required a confidentiality agreement quickly spread, and there was widespread criticism and speculation about the nature of the party.

The Bills released a statement saying they told McCoy that player's can't use the team logo without permission (via ESPN):

"We have reached out to LeSean and informed him that players are not permitted to use team marks for personal use without prior permission from the team."

McCoy deleted the Instagram invitation and posted a new one Sunday night, opening the party up to everyone and naming a long list of new guests:

Since the media and Internet took my before camp party outta context , I had to switch up my party strategy .  So tonight I'll be inviting everyone to my back to business party . It's unclear what McCoy means by "out of context." He posted a public invitation to a females-only 21-and-over private party that required pictures of attendees, social media handles, attire requirements, a confidentiality agreement, and pick-up and drop-off locations, and that's what people reacted to.

Although the Bills said McCoy needed to take down the invitation because of a logo issue, it seems that they also recognized the bad optics of the whole event. After taking it down, perhaps McCoy cancelled the entire event after it snowballed on him.

Add this to an offseason in which he was surprisingly traded and then implied Chip Kelly is a racist, and it has been an eventful summer for McCoy. Bills training camp begins July 31.

Russell Wilson turned down $21 million a year from the Seahawks, and it suggests he wants a game-changing deal

russell wilson seattle seahawks

Russell Wilson has set a deadline for later this week to work out a long-term contract with the Seattle Seahawks, and now we have more evidence that Wilson is seeking to become the highest-paid player in the NFL.

Wilson has turned down an offer worth "nearly $21 million per year," according to what Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has heard through the grapevine. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network appeared to confirm the nature of the offer when he called Florio's number "essentially accurate."

In the NFL, only four players have a contract with an average annual value greater than $20.5 million:

  • Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers — $22.0 million (five years, $110 million)
  • Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers — $21.85 million (four years, $87.4 million)
  • Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers — $20.76 million (five years, $103.8 million)
  • Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons — $20.75 million (five years, $103.75 million)

Presumably, the Seahawks' most recent offer to Wilson falls somewhere in the neighborhood of Newton and Ryan, but almost certainly in the top five ahead of Joe Flacco, whose deal has an average annual value of $20.1 million.

But this is the NFL, and contracts are never this simple. Just as important as, and possibly more important than, the average annual value is the amount of guaranteed money and the amount of money the player receives up-front. The latter is typically the only "fully guaranteed" portion of an NFL contract, with the rest of the guarantees coming into play only in the event of an injury.

While Florio's report says there is "significant guaranteed money" in the offer, according to Rapoport, the Seahawks' offer to Wilson includes "below $20 million cash up-front," with the rest being injury guarantees.

That is well below the $31 million that Newton received up front or the $30 million that Ryan received up front in fullyguaranteed money in the form of first-year salary and bonuses. Rather, the offer appears to be much closer to the $18.1 million in up-front cash the Bengals gave Andy Dalton in his six-year, $96 million deal.

That is nothing to scoff at, but Russell Wilson is not Andy Dalton.

russell wilson

Peter King of Sports Illustrated takes it a step further and points out that Rodgers signed his deal in 2013, when the NFL salary cap was $123 million and his salary represented 17.9% of the cap. The cap is now $143.3 million, and an equivalent percentage would be a salary of $25.6 million, suggesting Wilson is being lowballed with a $21 million offer.

Wilson has said he wants a deal in place before the start of training camp, which is later this week, or he will play the 2015 season under his current $1.5 million salary. Based on what the Seahawks' most recent offer appears to be, it doesn't look as if a deal will get done.

carli lloyd us japan final

US World Cup hero and Houston Dash midfielder Carli Lloyd scored the lone goal to defeat her ex-club Western New York Flash Saturday, just one day after she trashed her former team for trading her last season.

Prior to the match, Lloyd told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle's Jeff DiVeronica she "lost all respect" for the organization after they traded her to Houston without any prior indication they'd even consider doing so:

"To not have the decency and respect to call me prior [to the trade] and say, 'Hey, here's what we're thinking. The next couple years are busy for you [with the World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics],' or whatever. Just to tell me on the spot like that was pretty low.

"That's the reason no one wants to go play there. Because if you don't treat people with respect, you're not going to get respect in return and I have lost all respect for the organization. I would never want to play for an organization that doesn't respect me, doesn't respect what I do."

Lloyd got her revenge on the field the next day.

After after a corner kick was cleared, Lloyd's World Cup teammate Meghan Klingenberg was able to send the ball back into the box where Lloyd headed it in for a goal in the 49th minute:

Carli Lloyd goal

After the game, Lloyd refused to apologize for her prior comments, telling Equalizer's Megan Manzari she stands by what she said.

"I don’t think it’s a lot to ask to get a little respect in this league. We don’t get paid millions of dollars to just be uprooted from our families, friends and homes and be traded on the spot. It’s not just my situation. It’s across the board," Lloyd said. "I’m not here to whine, complain and create drama. I’m not about that, but I’m here to speak the truth and I’m here to stand up for what I believe in."

Minor league team suffers brutal loss when player who hit go-ahead home run doesn't touch home plate

The Delmarva Shorebirds, the Baltimore Orioles, single-A minor league team, lost in brutal fashion when they were denied the go-ahead runs on a ninth inning home run.

Down 3-4 to the Augusta Greenjackets, the San Francisco Giants' minor league team, in the top of the ninth, Shorebirds outfielder Elier Leyva hit a two-run home run to put the Shorebirds up one.

However, upon rounding the bases and trotting to home plate, Levya skipped right over home plate, never actually touching it and scoring the run.

Minor league HR fail

The Greenjackets reportedly saw that he didn't touch the plate. They then appealed to the umpires and had the home run overturned. Levya was called out, and the game, tied at 4-4, went to extra innings after a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

In extras, the Greenjackets hit a walk-off single to win 5-4.

Greenjackets manager Nestor Rojas said after the game, "I've been around baseball a long time and I've never seen anything like that."

Rojas continued, saying, "Their manager [Ryan Minor] came out and talked to the umpire, but I don't think he was really mad about it because he knew it. He thought the umpire was right."

The umpires didn't give Levya the benefit of the doubt. On the video, it seems Levya intended to drag his foot across home plate, and he probably didn't even realize he didn't touch the plate. It's the small details that can come back to haunt you.

Nike created a crazy mask that helps athletes cool down on the sidelines

Nike has been successful as a brand because it always stays on the forefront of innovation within the athletic sphere, not afraid to try things that are uncomfortable and daring.

This mindset just doesn't relate to the company's footwear, but to everything it creates. The latest mind-boggling idea comes the way of something built to help athletes recover.

Called the "Ice Hat," Nike has made a prototype of a mask that lets athletes cool down on the sidelines. The idea came from Nike's conversations with Olympic champion Ashton Eaton to find a better way to rejuvenate when not partaking in sport.

The result was a mask that, according to Nike, that has, "Inner layers designed to retain cool water without leaking. At the same time, a structural frame around the eyes keeps cold portions in place and close to the face while maintaining a secure fit."

The design is still in the early stages, but VP of Special Projects, Nike Innovation Sandy Bodecker said, "Simply put, the hood concentrates a cold mass out of an icebox, covering the face, head and neck, and allows a gradual and effective cooling of the head."

He goes on to add, "This is innovation in the making. We continue to work with Ashton on each iteration of the hood, and we plan to perfect this idea as we approach the next 18 months of elite track and field competition."

How long will it be before adidas starts to make one of these for Kanye to wear on the stage?

After crashing out of the Gold Cup in a historic semifinal upset loss to Jamaica, the US men's national team has a chance to salvage its summer in 10 weeks.

On October 9, the US will play Mexico in a one-game playoff to decide which CONCACAF team goes to the Confederations Cup in Russia in 2017.

It's a bit convoluted (we'd expect nothing less of CONCACAF), but North American soccer's governing body decided that the region's Confederations Cup berth would be decided in a playoff between the winners of the 2013 and 2015 Gold Cups. The US won the 2013 tournament. If they'd won it again this summer, they would have secured an automatic trip to Russia. Instead, they'll play Mexico, which won the 2015 Gold Cup in a 3-1 win over Jamaica.

It's an important game. It'll be played in front of an overwhelmingly pro-Mexico crowd at the Rose Bowl. Outside of a Gold Cup final or a World Cup qualifier, this is as big as US-Mexico gets on North American soil.

Making the Confederations Cup would give the US some advantages heading into the 2018 World Cup. The event, an eight-team tournament that takes place a year before at the same venues as Russia 2018, serves as a bit of a trial run for the real thing. The teams can get familiar with the facilities and travel. In addition, competitive international games between first-choice teams are hard to come by. Between now and the 2018 World Cup, the US only has World Cup qualifiers to test themselves in a competitive environment.

It also comes at a confusing time for the US team and coach Jurgen Klinsmann. After making it out of the Group of Death at the 2014 World Cup and beating Germany and Holland on the road at the beginning of the summer, the Gold Cup was a disaster. The US got outplayed for long stretches of its three group stage games before falling to a Caribbean team on US soil for the first time in 47 years. For the first time in his tenure, Klinsmann is facing legitimate criticism in the wake of a clear failure.

While he still has US Soccer behind him (president Sunil Gulati said Klinsmann's job is safe, even if he loses to Mexico), this feels like a big moment for the German coach. If he wins, he'll put the Jamaica loss behind him. If he loses on October 9, though, the cries for US Soccer to hold him to the same standards as his predecessors and evaluate whether he's the right manager to lead the team will only get louder. The US hasn't lost to Mexico since the 2011 Gold Cup final, it'd be an awful time to reverse that trend.

The Hungarian Grand Prix was a crazy F1 race that saw Ferrari win

Formula One Sebastian Vettel Ferrari Hungary GP

Few expected such a thrilling Hungarian Grand Prix, and even fewer expected Mercedes to finish down in sixth and eighth.

But the Hungaroring race was no ordinary event, as Adam Cooper explains.

The Hungarian Grand Prix proved to be an extraordinary race, one with an even more extraordinary result.

Consider that the winning team appeared to be in disarray on Friday, the driver who finished second had a 10s penalty, the man in third survived three collisions and had to stop for a new front wing, and the fourth-place finisher had to take a drive-through.

And fifth place went to a McLaren Honda, one that had not even completed a flying lap in Q2, and yet survived Sunday afternoon without a glitch.

Meanwhile, the man everybody expected to win was a humble sixth.

Given that he had made a bad start, ran off the road on the first lap, survived a heavy collision, stopped for a new wing, and taken a drive-through penalty, Lewis Hamilton was actually quite relieved to end up with such a result – not least because he finished two spots ahead of title rival Nico Rosberg.

So how did we end up with such an unexpected result, and how did Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari pull off a victory?

With its low speeds and hot weather, Hungary was always going to be a track that mixed things up a bit, and potentially gave others a chance to challenge Mercedes.

From the start of the weekend Red Bull looked strong, but in contrast Ferrari struggled on Friday, and a myriad problems cost the team mileage.

“Before Friday we had our data, and we were reading the data, and we thought, 'OK in Hungary it could be a good race,” said team boss Maurizio Arrivabene. “Of course, we were not thinking to win the race, but at least to fight. Then everything happened on Friday, and on Saturday the first thought was, 'Guys, calm down, we need to do our analysis, to put everything together.'

Red Bull Formula One Hungary GP“On Friday we were struggling a lot. I mean, at one stage James Allison said to me, 'Look, if I had to think about the worst day, today was the worst of my career.' But we put together everything, we were working with determination.

“They were using the FP3, and only the FP3, to try to adjust the car, and then after that Saturday evening they said, 'OK, we think that we are in a good way.' Not for sure thinking about this result, but at least to say we were in a good way.”

He makes it sound straightforward, but a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into honing the cars. Vettel earned third on the grid, and Kimi Raikkonen fifth, the Finn having lost more valuable track time in FP3 to a water leak.

Start the key

The key thing was that both men were on the odd numbered side of the grid, which in Hungary traditionally offers the chance to gain at least one spot on the man immediately ahead. But even Ferrari couldn't anticipate how things played out.

The start was of course the key to the race. Just as the Williams drivers swept past the Mercedes duo at Silverstone, so both Ferraris managed to do the same this time around. It wasn't just about the launch, as there was a fair bit of pure racecraft involved, especially in Raikkonen's case, as he went should to shoulder with Rosberg.

Both Mercedes drivers ran wide at Turn 2 in their desperate efforts to make amends, and then further around the lap Hamilton made his life even more difficult by jumping across the gravel trap.

Now it was game on for Ferrari. If you are in front you can control the race, and as we saw so often in his Red Bull days, one of Vettel's defining strengths is his ability to drive a perfect race if he's in clean air and can pace himself. And that's what he did on Sunday.

Formula One Hungary Grand Prix"It's true that when you start as we started today, in the open air, the car is giving to you more chance," said Arrivabene.

"And the guys in the back, the consumption of the tyres is quite high. But by the way, it's happened some times that we're on the back, and our consumption is higher. Today we were on the front, and it was OK..."

"It makes a difference if you find yourself in clean air, dictating the pace rather than following the top two cars," said Vettel.

"In some races we didn't really see them for long. In other races we were sort of stuck behind them and you cannot really show your true pace so I think - especially in the beginning of the race, but then again, I think the whole race – the pace was really really good."

Vettel was helped by having Raikkonen riding shotgun, and by the fact that Rosberg, for reasons which neither he nor the team could fully explain, struggled for pace on the soft tyre.

The lack of an immediate threat from Rosberg, and the fact that Hamilton had to claw his way up from as low as 10th position, meant that Vettel and Ferraricould run their own race, wait until the others had stopped, and play out an optimum strategy.

Safety car close call

It could have gone awry when Nico Hulkenberg's crash triggered a Virtual Safety Car. Vettel took advantage to pit for the medium tyres, and had it remained a VSC, he would have retained the advantage he'd built up.

But it soon morphed into a full safety car, and thus the gap disappeared. On lap 41, just before the Hulkenberg shunt, he had been 13s ahead of Raikkonen – fading as an ERS failure kicked in – and a huge 27s clear of Rosberg, whose pace had been even less convincing on the mediums he took for the middle stint.

All that was now gone. As the green flag flew for the restart Vettel had just Raikkonen protecting him from Rosberg, who immediately blew past the Finn. We might have expected to then see Rosberg, picking up his pace on the soft tyres having taken the pain of the mediums in that middle stint, harassing the leader, who had no choice but to go to mediums for the run to the flag.

Formula One Hungary GPBut to the surprise of many observers, Rosberg was back on mediums for that final stint (more of that later). We'll never know if he would have found more performance on the softs – his first stint was not that stunning remember – but on the mediums he could just about match Vettel, but no more.

In turn he had to keep his eyes on his mirrors, which were full of an irrepressible Daniel Ricciardo, the only member of the leading trio who was on the softs, and fresh ones at that.

Vettel had to work hard in that final stint, but he did his job to perfection. For lap after lap he stayed out of DRS range – 1.2s, 1.4s, 1.2s at the startline – and only once, on lap 53, did the gap dip down to 0.8s. Then with just under seven laps to go Rosberg and Ricciardo tangled, and the pressure was off Vettel.

He didn't slacken his pace, as Daniil Kvyat was close enough to keep him on his toes, albeit with a 10s penalty hanging over him, and thus Vettel kept banging in quick laps. He wasn't exactly about to let Kvyat catch up and pass and take the chequered flag first, although that could have happened! Vettel's team radio comments after the flag showed just what the win meant to him.

It was a superb performance, and one of which his old mentor and pal Michael Schumacher would have been proud – winning on a weekend when the odds appeared to be stacked against him. The downside for Ferrari was Kimi's ERS failure, a rare sign of mechanical trouble for the Maranello team.

Red Bull's step forward

RBR's stunning form meanwhile underlined just how Hungary shifts the emphasis from the power unit to the whole package. There were positive signs in Silverstone already, and this time the car seemed to be hooked up from the start of the weekend, and both drivers gained confidence, something that was very evident in the race.

"We knew that this track would play to some of our strengths," said Christian Horner. "And it is great that we managed to capitalise on that with a double podium, with Dany Kvyat's first podium, Daniel Ricciardo's first podium of the year. it was great team performance and I think that this type of circuit with lack of dependency on straightline speed has played to our strengths."

Ricciardo in particular was on the sort of charging form that saw him gain three opportunistic wins last year, and the fact that he made it to the podium after three separate collisions was a reminder that he's a real racer – going around the outside of Hamilton at the restart was pretty clear evidence of that.

Red Bull F1The great unknown is what might have happened had he found a way past Rosberg and given himself a few laps with which to tackle Vettel.

"It felt a little bit like deja vu from last year," said Horner. "We strategically made the call at the first stop to put the hard tyre on, we felt our only possibilities would be in the later part of the race if there were a safety car. And sure enough we had that set of tyres left, the safety car came out and it teed it up beautifully.

"Kimi had an issue, so Daniel made his way past Kimi fairly easily and managed to find his way past Lewis. There was quite a big contact, which damaged the car quite significantly, but despite that he was able to close in on the leading pair and he was always going to have a go, and obviously got a run up the inside, got in a bit too deep and Nico came across his bows on the exit and it looked like a racing incident. It is a shame without that, if he had managed to get pass Nico it would have set up an interesting finish with Seb."

What went wrong for Mercedes

So what of Mercedes? On the face of it was a disastrous afternoon for the drivers and team, but they still both scored points, and Hamilton's main concern was that he logged four more than his title rival.

Hamilton made no excuses afterwards, admitting that he'd made mistake after mistake, and he must now be hoping that he's used up his quota for the season in one afternoon.

This was definitely not a good weekend for Rosberg, who lost out to Lewis by almost 0.6s in qualifying and then found himself struggling for pace on Sunday. He also got a lot of flak for the seemingly conservative decision to go with the medium tyre for the final stint.

Earlier we'd heard a team radio conversation which indicated that he simply wanted to mirror what Hamilton was doing on the basis that he could stay safely ahead, and wouldn't be caught out by the softs fading in the latter stages.

However, Toto Wolff insisted that ultimately the responsibility for that choice was the team's.

The Virtual Safety Car came out when Rosberg was approaching the last corner, and he ducked straight into the pits – the tyres that were ready and waiting for emergency use, the "default" tyres, were the mediums, based on the number of laps to the flag.

Mercedes F1 HungaryOne lap later, and the shorter final stint length would have seen mediums wheeled away and softs put in their place. And had Rosberg been a corner further back when the VSC call was made, the team would have had time to make that last minute switch anyway.

"It was one corner," Wolff told Motorsport.com. "They were in the second last corner when the Virtual Safety Car was deployed, one corner earlier, the default tyre would have been changed from medium to soft. The medium tyre was sitting there, the Virtual Safety Car was deployed, he got the call, he came in, the medium tyre wasn't there."

It could be argued that Mercedes reacted too quickly to the VSC. If there was some doubt about tyre choice, why not let Rosberg run another lap? With a VSC lap taking around 90 seconds that would have provided plenty of time to chat with the driver and make a more considered call.

After all, plenty of drivers pitted on subsequent VSC laps without suffering any harm, as by definition the gaps are maintained.

It would perhaps be unfair to suggest that after Monaco this is the second time that Mercedes hasn't quite got it right under a VSC, and the team would probably say that the risk in not coming in immediately is that a VSC could turn into a proper safety car – which is what eventually happened – and that could complicate matters.

Meanwhile, Wolff insisted that the tyre choice definitely wasn't a case of Rosberg wanting to cover Hamilton's strategy: "Earlier, before, but not in that situation."

Lewis Hamilton F1Nevertheless the damage has been done in that many observers thought Rosberg's radio comment showed a little too much focus on his teammate, when perhaps he should have been looking more at the fight ahead and trying to win the race.

Hamilton's remark when he went off track on lap one also told its own story: "Nico crossed over my line there, pushed me wide..."

It's no great surprise that these two remain resolutely focussed on each other, but they could do well to take a look at the world championship table, which shows Vettel just 42 points behind Hamilton, and only 21 behind Rosberg.

It's a long shot given the overall picture of pure performance, but history relates that sometimes battling teammates are pipped at the line by someone they didn't see coming up on the rails.

It happened for example with Alain Prost vs Williams in 1986, and again with Kimi vs McLaren in 2007. This season could still have a few twists and turns.

The NFL is changing the procedures that failed to catch the Patriots in Deflategate

NFL Footballs

The NFL told its officials there will be new procedures for how game balls are handled and tested during the 2015 season, according Mike Pereira of Fox Sports, the former vice president of officiating in the National Football League.

The footballs will still be inflated within a range of 12.5-13.5 pounds per square-inch (PSI) however, there will several important changes:

  • The referee will now designate two members of his crew to inspect the footballs prior to the game. Last season, the referee was the only person who conducted the inspection.
  • Each football will be numbered prior to the game and the measured PSIs will be recorded for each ball.
  • If a football is measured to have a PSI below 12.5 or above 13.5, it will be adjusted to 13.0 PSI. Previously, there was no specific target for the adjustment.
  • During randomly selected games, the game balls will be collected at halftime and their PSIs will be remeasured and the results recorded.

By making these changes, the NFL seems to be acknowledging that the previous procedures for inspecting the footballs was inadequate. This may be important because these are the very procedures used in Deflategate to bust the New England Patriots for using deflated footballs in the AFC Championship game.

According to Kevin Seifert of ESPN, these new procedures "undermine" Brady's 4-game suspension. From his article on Monday:

For Brady, however, each change can be viewed as a variable that casts doubt on culpability. Consider:

  • The NFL has now acknowledged that it's important to know the exact pregame inflation of each football. Brady was suspended without it.
  • The league admits that security surrounding footballs needed to be improved. Proof of Brady’s guilt was based in part on a Patriots employee taking game footballs into a bathroom during pregame warm-ups.
  • The NFL knows now that there should be a detailed process for checking compliance at halftime and after the game. Brady's suspension was rooted in an unprecedented and chaotic halftime scene at the AFC Championship Game where two separate needles were used to test some footballs before time ran out.
  • The league has recognized, in effect, that its previous approach was lacking. Brady has been suspended for participation in a scheme with little of the documentation and process the NFL now considers essential.”

The flip-side to this argument is that the NFL punished Brady based on the procedures and rules that were in place at the time. Like any set of rules, on the field or off, the league is simply learning and evolving and that the new rules and procedures can't be retroactively applied.

The NFL can also argue that the measurements were only part of the evidence against Brady.

Still, considering the timing of these changes, after Brady's appeal but with the final ruling still pending, it is hard not to look at these changes as something of an admission that the original investigation was at least partially flawed.

We have reached out to the NFL and the NFL Players' Association for comment and will update when we hear back.

Eagles coach Chip Kelly identifies the gamble NFL teams have to make if they want to get franchise quarterback fast

Chip Kelly

Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly gutted his team this off-season in a roster overhaul that involved trading his starting quarterback Nick Foles to the St. Louis Rams for Sam Bradford, a player coming off of back-to-back ACL injuries.

While he drew plenty of criticism for the move, Kelly told Philadelphia Magazine's Tim McManus that he sees the trade as a calculated risk he needed to take, believing there are only two ways to get a franchise quarterback: draft one, or acquire one when he's coming off of an injury and his stock is low.

Since the Eagles had the No. 20 pick in this year's draft, they didn't have a shot at Florida State's Jameis Winston or Oregon's Marcus Mariota – the only two quarterbacks in the draft who many experts believed to be starting-caliber worthy. Needing a franchise quarterback, but not wanting to begin a long-term rebuilding process, Kelly believed he had to make a trade.

"We looked at everything, and we knew we weren’t going to pick No. 1 or No. 2. So, and I’ve said it before, if you’re not going to pick one or two, how do you go get a quarterback?" Kelly said. "Peyton Manning switched teams because of an injury. Drew Brees switched teams because of an injury. So we went down that path."

Lik Bradford, both Manning and Brees left their original teams after suffering serious injuries. Manning was released by the Indianapolis Colts in 2012 after missing an entire season due to a neck injury, and Brees left the Chargers in 2006 after suffering a dislocated shoulder and torn labrum and rotator cuff.

Brees and Manning were the only two quarterbacks who are not playing for their original teams to finish in the top-10 of total quarterback rating last season, Manning finished third and Brees fifth.

Sam Bradford RamsKelly believes Bradford can have similar success now in a new environment. A consensus All-American and Heisman Trophy winner in college, Bradford certainly has the talent to be a franchise quarterback, the problem, however, has been his inability to stay on the field.

Bradford was drafted No. 1 overall by the St. Louis Rams in 2010, and won Rookie of the Year his first season. Since then he has played in just 23 out of a possible 64 games — including missing all of last season due to his second consecutive ACL tear.

Teams are typically weary of quarterbacks coming off of serious injuries, since many appear to be skittish while in the pocket when they initially return, something Kelly acknowledges, but isn't overly concerned about.

"That’s happened, but I’ve also seen quarterbacks like Drew Brees come back with 25 staples in his shoulder and everybody said he would never play again," Kelly said. "You don’t know. But that’s a risk we were willing to take. You know it’s a risk, but it was a risk we were willing to take."

NOW WATCH: How Alex Rodriguez, the highest-paid player in MLB history, makes and spends his $400 million

What Russell Wilson is risking if he turns down a $21 million per year contract

$

0

The latest reports on the negotiations between Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks say he has turned down a contract worth close to $21 million per year, a deal that would make him one of the NFL's five-highest-paid players.

If Wilson does play out the final year of his entry-level contract — he has set a deadline for the start of training camp later the week — he will be taking a risk playing on what is essentially a one-year, $1.5 million deal while rejecting what is likely in the neighborhood of five-years, $104 million.

However, that risk starts to minimize next year. If Wilson does not sign a new contract, the Seahawks can give him the franchise tag for up to three seasons. If Wilson plays the 2016 (projected salary of $25.2 million) and 2017 ($30.2 million) seasons under franchise tags, he would make ~$56.9 million over the next three years, just shy of the ~$62.3 million he'd make with a contract that pays him $20.8 million per year.

Russell Wilson Contract Projection

Things get tricky after 2017. The Seahawks could use a third franchise tag, but it would come with a whopping 44% raise over his 2017 salary, which would be something in the neighborhood of $43.5 million for one year.

That is unlikely to happen, which means Wilson would probably become a free agent after the 2017 season if he goes year-to-year. If Wilson hits free agency, the sky is the limit considering how many teams would love to have a 29-year-old Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

In other words, if Wilson can get through the 2015 season, Wilson can really cash-in long-term by not signing a new contract now.

The US Olympic Committee has dropped Boston's 2024 Olympic bid, the Associated Press reports.

The USOC released a statement confirming that it won't submit Boston's bid to the IOC.

The move comes after Boston mayor Marty Walsh said he wouldn't immediately sign the host city contract that would have required the city to cover any cost overruns.

Boston's bid faced heavy opposition, with worries over costs and skepticism over the purported economic benefits of hosting. Over the winter public support for the bid began to disappear, and since February the majority of residents have been against the Olympics:

The opposition is now celebrating:

The USOC has until September 15 to back a new potential host city. The most obvious choice is Los Angeles, which was the favorite in the initial stages of bidding, and wouldn't have to build expensive infrastructure and venues like Boston would have.
