Why Aaron Rodgers throws a ton of interceptions in practice and doesn't care

$

aaron rodgers packers

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has the lowest interception rate in NFL history, has thrown five interceptions through six practices at training camp.

So what's the problem?

As Rodgers and coach Mike McCarthy told the Journal Sentinel's Michael Cohen, there is none.

Cohen reports that Rodgers has been purposely throwing low-percentage passes into coverage, where they could easily be intercepted, in order to force his wide receivers to make a play on the ball. While this may result in him throwing more picks in practice, forcing his receivers to make difficult plays helps him learn what works and what doesn't and leads to fewer interceptions in the regular season — the games that matter.

"I threw five last year in the regular season, so I know how to play in those games," Rodgers said. "Practice is about — it's different plays. The playbook is exponentially larger than the regular season, game-week plan. So we're trying different things. ... So you make different throws. You're working through different plays."

The Wall Street Journal's Kevin Clark described it like this:

When speaking with Cohen, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said something similar.

"I would think at least three or four of [the interceptions] were competitive balls," McCarthy said. "I mean, he’s going to do things in training camp that he might not obviously do on a Sunday — give guys chances to make plays and so forth. So I guess to answer your question, I’m not concerned about [the interceptions]."

Rodgers' strategy isn't new. It's something coaches noticed last year when he would throw two interceptions in a practice, and then go more than a month without throwing any in a regular-season game. During the middle of Rodgers' eventual MVP campaign last season, the Journal Sentinel's Bob McGinn wrote about Rodgers' practice philosophy and described the response when he asked Packers coaches when was the last time he threw a bad interception:

When was Rodgers' last ugly interception, anyway?

"You tell me," said McCarthy. "You'll have to go back a ways to find one of those. I can't think of one off the top of my head."

Alex Van Pelt, the team's first-year coach of quarterbacks, had a ready reply. It was Thursday in practice, two of them, in fact.

Rodgers also was intercepted half a dozen times or more during training camp. For the most part, the coaches say that's just Rodgers testing a certain route against a certain coverage and then storing away the results for when the throw counts."

For Rodgers, this is all part of the plan.

It's no secret that Floyd Mayweather loves to flaunt his wealth.

On his Instagram page, he is known to post photos and videos of his ultra-luxurious life, which is filled with a multi-million dollar collection of supercars. His garage covers most of the top-end brands: Bugatti, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and more.

Earlier this year, Mayweather posted a photo of his three Bugatti Veyrons with the caption "$6.2 million spent for just three cars that don't depreciate, only appreciate." Only 450 Veyrons were ever produced.

Mayweather purchased the Bugattis from Fusion Luxury Motors in North Los Angeles, which he touts as "the best luxury car dealership in the world" on his Instagram.

Obi Okeke, one of the owners of Fusion, feels "very fortunate" to have such a high-spending and high-profile client in Mayweather. He says Mayweather will stop in about once a month just to see what's available and if there is anything he wants to buy.

"As of a couple months ago, it was reported that he had bought about 39 cars from me," says Okeke. "It may be like 40 or 41, and we're working on a few more deals."

With the top car almost hitting $4 million, here are the most expensive cars currently available in the exotic car dealer's inventory.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested last night in Santa Clara, California, ABC7's Matt Keller first reported.

According to a screenshot from the Police Department obtained by local Fox station KTVU, Smith's charges include Hit & Run, DUI, and vandalism charges. His bail was set for $26,000.

Smith  has been embroiled with legal troubles throughout his career. Per ProFootball Talk:

Smith was arrested for DUI in 2012, faced weapons charges later that year after an incident at his house that left him with stab wounds and then picked up another DUI after getting into a car accident in September 2013. He entered a rehab facility after that accident and missed five games during the 2013 season.

We've reached out to Smith's agent and the 49ers for comment. The Santa Clara Police Department is expected to publish a press release this morning.

Dodgers payroll now exceeds $300 million, including $90 million for players not on the team

$

0

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers desperately want to win a World Series, and they're willing to spend big in order to do it.

Since the new ownership group, led by former Los Angles Lakers point guard Magic Johnson, purchased the team for a record $2 billion in 2012, the Dodgers haven't just become big spenders – they've become the biggest spenders.

According to both SB Nation and Spotrac, the Dodgers' payroll, which at the start of the season was an already MLB-leading $230 million, now currently exceeds $300 million. Not only is that nearly $90 million more than the team with the second-highest payroll, the New York Yankees, but, that's $15 million more than the Oakland Athletics', Tampa Bay Rays', Arizona Diamondbacks', and Miami Marlins' current payrolls combined ($285 million).

Even more mind-boggling is the fact that nearly $90 million of the Dodgers' gigantic payroll is going to players not currently on the team's roster.

The Dodgers have become so willing to shell out money for players they simply toss aside shortly after, they're currently paying approximately $87.8 million this season to players who have either been traded, released, or, for other reasons, are simply no longer with the team.

Los Angeles Dodgers $87 million to players not on team

That $87.8 million alone is actually more than six team's current payrolls – Astros, Rays, Diamondbacks, Athletics, Indians, and Marlins.

While the Dodgers' big-spending ways have resulted in a respectable 62-46 record, the Astros actually have a similar record – and with a payroll that's drastically less than the Dodgers'.

Here's how the two teams compare, as of August 7:

  • Dodgers: $300 million current payroll, 62-46 record, .574 win percentage
  • Astros: $79 million current payroll, 61-49 record, .555 win percentage

The Dodgers may be out-spending the Astros by approximately $221 million, but that's only resulted in a single win more than the cash-strapped Astros.

While the Dodgers' payroll has already exceeded $300 million, there's a strong possibility it may increase even more. Star pitcher Zack Greinke, one of the two Cy Young winners the Dodgers currently have anchoring their rotation, has the option to opt out of his current contract after the season – and with an MLB-leading 1.71 ERA, he'll almost surely do so, and demand a hefty raise in the process.

Don't worry, at the looks of things, it doesn't seem like the Dodgers will fret over giving it to him.

A Seahawks player explained the biggest problem with his teammates getting massive contracts

$
0
0

Kam Chancellor Russell Wilson

Over the past three seasons, the Seattle Seahawks have evolved into an NFL powerhouse, developing a young core of players that made it to back-to-back Super Bowls.

Part of the reason Seattle has become so dominant is because they hit the jackpot in the draft — picking Kam Chancellor in the fifth round in 2010, Richard Sherman in the fifth round in 2011, and Russell Wilson in the third round in 2012, to name only a few.

If you've followed the NFL at all over the past years, you know that these players have developed into legitimate stars. Crucially for Seattle, these transformations occurred while the players were under contract on cheap rookie deals. Two years ago, when Russell Wilson beat Peyton Manning in Super Bowl XLVIII, he made just $619,000 as part of his four-year, $3 million rookie deal. That same season, Richard Sherman made just $1.4 million. These small contracts let Seattle use their free cap space on free agents and contract extensions, allowing them to largely keep the same core together while adding players without having to worry about going over the cap.

Fast forward two years and the Seahawks are now set to pay $97 million in average salary to just 10 players through 2017. This off-season, Russell Wilson agreed to an $87 million contract extension. Marshawn Lynch and Bobby Wagner locked up $31 and $43 million extensions, respectively. The Seahawks also traded for Saints TE Jimmy Graham — giving Wilson arguably his most dangerous receiver to date, but adding another $8 million to their payroll.

These contract extensions are unsurprising. Big paydays are what happen when a team successfully develops young talent into superstars, and winning games and championship inevitably makes players more expensive.

But as Michael Bennett told Yahoo! Sports' Frank Schwab, another part of what's made the Seahawks so dominant over the past years is that they've been able to sign so many quality role players to mid-range deals. With each subsequent large contract extension, it becomes harder and harder to stack the roster with the sorts of players. Here's how Bennett explained it:

"That's what people don't understand, people talk about Tony McDaniel like 'Oh, he's just another guy,' but think about, how does a Bobby Wagner make those tackles?"

"These are the workers. It's like the clothing line. You see the people who own the clothing line, but you don't see the people who work and make the clothes. The middle man is always needed for success in this league."

Although his clothing line analogy is a bit confusing, Bennett's reference to McDaniel represents the larger problem the Seahawks are beginning to face — and will continue to face in the coming seasons. McDaniel started 29 of 32 games as a defensive tackle over the past two seasons and was due to make just $2.5 million this year. Unlike many of his defensive teammates, he wasn't a superstar or a particularly big-name, but on defense the Seahawks have often relied on lesser-known players — the "middle men" in Bennett's analogy — to play key roles.

But since the Seahawks needed to free up space to lock down these big players, they cut McDaniel, and will continue to have to shed small contracts in order to afford bigger ones.

Kam Chancellor

With every big contract the Seahawks give out, another player who hasn't yet received his big extension will feel he deserves one. Kam Chancellor is holding out of training camp until he renegotiates and his deal, and in that Yahoo! Sports piece Schwab reported that Bennett isn't happy with his contract, either. As it stands, the Seahawks are just $2.5 million below the salary cap, per overthecap.com. If Chancellor and Bennett do end up renegotiating their contracts, they'll have to be back-loaded so that Seattle can stay under the cap this season. Other teams with more cap space, may be able to poach these players for bigger salaries next spring.

The Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers are projected to be the best teams in the NFL this year, at least according to Sportsbook.ag.

With preseason games beginning this weekend, the Seahawks and Packers each have an over/under win total of 11.0, just ahead of the New England Patriots (10.5), Indianapolis Colts (10.5), and Denver Broncos (10.5). No team won more than 12 games last season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are projected to be the most improved team with an over/under of 6.0 wins, which would be a four-win improvement over last year's 2-14 season. The New York Jets and Tennessee Titans are also projected to be much improved. Meanwhile, several teams are expected to take big steps back in 2015, including the Dallas Cowboys (9.5), Arizona Cardinals (8.5), Detroit Lions (8.5), and Pittsburgh Steelers (8.5).

49ers coach gives heartfelt speech about getting help after cutting a player who has been arrested 5 times

Mike Tomsula Aldon Smith

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula addressed the media today and, before answering questions, took some time to reflect on Aldon Smith — the 49ers linebacker who was cut today following an arrest on DUI, hit and run, and vandalism charges.

Smith has been in and out of trouble off the field over the last few years. He has been arrested five times since 2012, three of which were related to drinking and driving.

Tomsula got visibly choked up while speaking about Smith, and then talked more generally about the need to help anyone who may be struggling in life. It was a great moment.

Here's the text of Tomsula's monologue (via NFL.com):

"I think you’re all aware the San Francisco 49ers released Aldon Smith today. It’s a sad day. This is a day that doesn’t have anything to do about football.

"Although he won’t be playing football for the San Francisco 49ers, he will be supported and helped, and he will not have to walk this path alone. That comes from our ownership down. He will not have to walk this path alone. We’re not worried about football. It has nothing to do with football.

"The other thing I would like to say: I understand the platform we are on. I understand where this goes on the news. What I would like to say is if one person out there reads this, and you’re struggling, get help. Go get it. You’re worth it. You’re worth it. There’s value in every human being. Get the help. You don’t have to walk alone. Find it. It’s there. And although Aldon will not be playing football here, we will be supporting him. He will not be alone."

Here's video of the speech:

Aldon Smith 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers released star pass rusher Aldon Smith after he was arrested and charged with hit-and-run, DUI, and vandalism in California on Friday. It was his fifth arrest in three years.

The Smith situation is the latest hit in what has been a disastrous eight months for the team.

Heading into the 2014 season, the 49ers had reached the NFC Championship Game the past three seasons, including a 2012 Super Bowl appearance.

The season was a profound disappointment. The team ended up losing four of their last five games, and finished the year with a 8-8 record. Their starting quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, went from being called a star to hearing rumors he would soon be traded. Their brash head coach, Jim Harbaugh, who almost led them to a Super Bowl in his second season, was essentially fired just hours after the 49ers regular season finale (the press release stated they "mutually agreed to part ways," but Harbaugh would later confirm he did not want to leave the team).

And that was just the beginning.

The 49ers are currently in the midst of the one of the most turbulent off-seasons in recent memory. As if the Harbaugh loss wasn't enough, they had an unusual number of players retire in their primes and lost many others in free agency.

In June, SI's Peter King noted that the 49ers lost 14 of the 25 most important members of the organization after Harbaugh was fired in December. That number is now up to 15 with Smith's release, and only two members of the defense that started the 2013 Super Bowl are still on the team. Here's who's gone:

  • Jim Harbaugh, head coach: Fired/mutually agreed to part ways, now head coach at the University of Michigan
  • Vic Fangio, defensive coordinator: Fired, now the defensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears
  • Greg Roman, offensive coordinator: Left to take the same job with the Buffalo Bills
  • Brad Seely, special teams coach: Left to take the same job with the Oakland Raiders
  • Patrick Willis, starting linebacker: Retired
  • Michael Crabtree, starting wide receiver: Left in free agency to join the Oakland Raiders
  • Mike Iupati, starting guard: Left in free agency to join the Arizona Cardinals
  • Anthony Davis, starting tackle: Retired/sabbatical
  • Chris Borland, starting linebacker: Retired
  • Justin Smith, starting defensive end: Retired
  • Frank Gore, starting running back: Left in free agency to join the Indianapolis Colts
  • Andy Lee, punter: Traded to the Cleveland Browns
  • Perrish Cox, starting corner back: Left in free agency to join the Tennessee Titans
  • Chris Culliver, starting corner back: Left in free agency to join the Washington Redskins
  • Aldon Smith, starting pass rusher: Released

With Aldon Smith's arrest being just the latest thing to go wrong for the 49ers, fans and experts wondered just how big of a debacle the team's off-season has been:

Vegas has the 49ers winning 6.5 games. Only four teams are predicted to be worse:

NFL Over/Unders

With such a disastrous off-season, and large roster and coaching turnover, new head coach Jim Tomsula definitely has his work cut out for him this season.

The pros and cons of drinking protein shakes after a workout

$

What's the first thing you do immediately after a workout? Saunter up to the juice bar and crush a protein shake, right? You may want to reconsider.

Registered dietitian, exercise physiologist, and host of SiriusXM's Doctor RadioSamantha Heller, breaks down the best times to reach for the the protein and discusses the popular brand Muscle Milk.

When asked for comment, CytoSport, the maker of Muscle Milk, responded with the following:

"When she refers to 310 calories and 32 grams protein, she is referencing the serving size we recommend for "individuals looking to build size and gain muscle mass." We recommend a serving size that provides 150 calories and 16 grams of protein for those wanting "fewer calories."

The particular smoothie she mentions that includes 6 oz non-fat Greek yogurt, medium banana, 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of ground flax seed would provide 310 calories, 20 grams protein, 52 grams carbohydrate (with 37 grams sugar).

Examples of activities that consume approximately 300 calories for a 160 lb individual: 1 hour leisurely biking; 1 hour of resistance training; ½ hour of running moderately (5 mph); 45 minutes swimming laps leisurely; and 1 hour walking (3.5mph).

Muscle Milk products are designed to provide high quality milk protein in a form that is great tasting and convenient and without a lot of sugar or carbs (that is why we use artificial sweeteners) for active individuals.

Acesulfame Potassium is an artificial sweetener that is 200 times sweeter than sugar so a little provides great sweetness without adding calories/carbohydrates (this is the benefit of artificial sweeteners — also called "low calorie sweeteners").

Acesulfame potassium was approved by FDA in 1988 (so has been in use for more than 25 years); approved by Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives of the United Nations, World Health Organization and European Union’s Scientific Community on Food.

We know some people want to avoid artificial sweeteners so we make products for them – Muscle Milk Organic and Muscle Milk Naturals (both sweetened with cane sugar and stevia extract)."

Stephen Curry's shoe deal with Under Armour is a total steal

$

stephen curry

Stephen Curry's deal with Under Armour became even more of a bargain when it broke that Adidas is offering James Harden $200 million in an attempt to steal him from Nike.

While these kinds of offers can be the norm for NBA superstars — according to Forbes, Kevin Durant signed a 10-year extension with Nike worth as much as $300 million with royalties and Adidas gave Derrick Rose a 13-year, $185 million deal — Curry's deal with Under Armour looks paltry in comparison.

Though the exact terms are hard to figure out, ESPN's Darren Rovell notes that Nike missed the chance to keep Curry as one of the faces of its basketball line. After spending his first four years in the NBA with Nike, Nike originally offered Curry a deal worth $2.5 million per year. Under Armour swooped in with an offer worth less than $4 million per year for Curry, which Nike didn't match.

And Curry's impact on Under Armour has been profound. The reigning MVP for the champion Golden State Warriors, Curry's popularity has never been higher. It was reported in July that Under Armour's shoe sales were skyrocketing from Curry's shoe, The Curry One, moving Under Armour into second in the shoe market, surpassing Adidas.

In the second quarter of 2015, during the same time frame when Curry won MVP and the Warriors won the title, Under Armour's basketball shoe sales went bonkers with sales growing by 754% in that category.

Curry is a bargain for everybody. In 2012, when people were concerned about his long-term health, he signed a four-year, $44 million extension with the Warriors, which is a steal now. Furthermore, he's under contract for another two years, so he's still awaiting his giant payday, which will almost surely earn him more than $25 million per year.

Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank said he wants to build Under Armour's basketball line into a $1 billion business, with Curry as its face. Much like his NBA contract, Curry will reap the benefits when his deal with Under Armour ends.

Russell Wilson's new contract doesn't prevent him from playing baseball

On July 31, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson signed a four-year, $87.6 million contract extension. The complex deal gives Wilson $60 million guaranteed, but is essentially structured as a one-year, $31.7 million contract with four years of team options.

According to NBC Sports, one thing the deal does not prevent is Wilson returning to the baseball field. The news outlet reports Wilson would "definitely consider" a baseball career if his rights were traded to the Seattle Mariners.

If Wilson were to relaunch his baseball career and make the major leagues, he would be only the eighth player since 1970 to play both sports at the highest level.  Famously, Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders played baseball and football simultaneously while others like Brian Jordan, Drew Henson and Chad Hutchinson played one and then the other.

After graduating high school, Wilson was selected in the 41st round (1,222 pick overall) of the 2007 amateur draft by the Baltimore Orioles. He opted to go to college at North Carolina State and was then drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 4th round (140th pick overall) of the 2010 draft. After enjoying success in his first season as a quarterback in the National Football League, Wilson told the Rockies he wouldn't be pursuing his career as a baseball player. He was then selected by the Texas Rangers in the 2013 Rule-5 draft.

In 93 career games at the minor league level, Wilson hit .229 with 5 home runs and 26 runs batted in. He had 19 career stolen bases.

Report: There are new details emerging about a woman's rape allegations against hockey star Patrick Kane

Patrick Kane

New details have emerged in the investigation into a woman's rape allegations against Chicago Blackhawks all-star Patrick Kane, the Buffalo News reports, citing unnamed sources close to the investigation.

"Sources with knowledge of the investigation said that the young woman who has accused the hockey superstar of rape had bite marks on her shoulders and a scratch on her leg after the alleged attack," Buffalo News reports.

The woman alleges that she met Kane at SkyBar, a downtown Buffalo nightclub, before her and her friend accompanied him back to his gated-home in Hamburg, New York, sources told the Buffalo News.

That's when the accuser says she went into another room of the house, where she alleges Kane "overpowered her and raped her," sources told the Buffalo News.

Kane has not been charged with a crime but has reportedly hired a lawyer. We reached out to his attorney and will update this post if we hear back.

Since Kane entered the league in 2007, his name has been in the news for his alleged off-ice behavior.

In August 2009, he was charged with second-degree robbery for allegedly beating and robbing a taxi cab driver over a dispute over a fare, the Chicago Tribune reported at the time. He ultimately pleaded guilty to noncriminal disorderly conduct, ESPN reported

In January 2010, on a team road trip to Vancouver, Kane, and other teammates, were pictured riding around the city in a limousine, partying with their shirts off while accompanied by three fully clothed women.

In May 2012, Kane was spotted in Madison, Wisconsin, drunkenly celebrating Cinco de Mayo

There is no denying Kane is one of the most talented players in the National Hockey League. Taken as the first pick overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Kane has tallied 205 goals and 352 assists in 576 career games. He has helped lead the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cups in the the past six years (2010, 2013 and 2015). Kane's contract will pay him $13.8 million in the upcoming season.

After an off-season that saw the Seahawks go all in, the Eagles blow things up, and the Patriots get into an all-out war with the NFL, football is finally back.

While the best teams from 2014 look like the favorites entering 2015, plenty has changed over the past six months.

We picked out the teams, players, and coaches who won the offseason, and others who very much did not.

WINNER: Chip Kelly (Philadelphia Eagles)

One thing to know: No one gained more power this off-season than Kelly. After winning an internal team struggle in January, he set out dismantling the roster and rebuilding it to his liking. Time will tell if Kelly's radical transformation of the Eagles' roster is a success, but it's abundantly clear that this is his team now.

LOSER: San Francisco 49ers

One thing to know: It was a rough spring for the 49ers. They lost Anthony Davis, Chris Borland, Patrick Williams, Justin Smith, Michael Crabtree, Mike Iupati, Frank Gore, and Chris Culliver to either retirement or free agency. Jim Harbaugh is also out. They're widely expected to take a huge step backward.

WINNER: Andrew Luck (Indianapolis Colts)

One thing to know: The Colts added two big offensive threats in running back Frank Gore and wide receiver Andre Johnson, and no one will benefit more than Luck. The combination of T.Y. Hilton and Johnson is scary, and adding a legitimately dangerous running back in Gore will open up the already-lethal Colts' passing game. Luck is already a dark-horse MVP candidate.

Yankees

An ugly scene unfolded at Yankee Stadium when Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner appeared to be hit in the back of the head by a baseball thrown onto the field by a fan.

The incident came in the top of the 4th inning when Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays hit a long home run into the seats beyond the left field wall. In what has become a tradition at many ballparks in recent years, a fan threw the ball back onto the field only this time the fan hit a player.

Gardner appeared to be OK in between innings and stayed in the game. Here is the full video via the YES Network:

A Wall Street billionaire has one piece of money advice for pro athletes

Marc Lasry

Billionaire Marc Lasry, CEO of the $14 billion hedge fund Avenue Capital and co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, has some advice for NBA players: Pretend you don't have any money.

In a recent episode of "Wall Street Week," Lasry said friends and family usually start to ask for money when players get signed.

"You've got to sort of understand, for them, they're the only person out of their neighborhood or out of that whole family structure that has made money,
Lasry said. "So what ends up happening is the minute they make money everybody is always asking for money.

"What we try to explain to our players is look, you know, save your money. Everyone is going to tell you: 'Here is a great investment.' Just save it ... you should be saving your money. Also, just tell everyone you have no money. Say: 'Look I get paid, but money goes automatically to here and I don't have access to that money.'"

Lasry said one of the big challenges was being able to say "no."

Another financial challenge players can face is making their money last, Lasry said.

"Imagine if when you went [to college] somebody said to you: 'Here is $4 million. And by the way, I'm going to pay you $4 million or $3 million for the next four years.' That is what rookie contracts are today. And you're 19 years old. I mean, you know, the world is your oyster. You think you're going to live forever."

The problem, though, Lasry said, is that the players tend to focus on the total amount their contract is worth.

"You're going to spend that money," Lasry said. "And that's what a lot of the mistakes are. People sort of look and they focus on the dollar number and forget they've got to pay taxes and they've got to pay their agent and they've got to do all these things."

Some of the players burn through as much of $195 million in earnings by the time they come to retire, Lasry said.

"I think as they learn — they do learn it towards the end of their career," he said. "By that time, that money has gone away. I know players who've made $200 million over the course of their career and they probably have $5 million in the bank."
