After being sidelined for 11 months with post-concussion syndrome, Sidney Crosby finally returned to the ice in November. But he only played eight games before being sidelined again.
And this time, some are worried that it could be permanent.
Joanne C. Gerstner of the New York Times notes that it took three weeks for the Pittsburgh Penguins to even acknowledge that Crosby was again suffering from concussion-related symptoms, something they finally did this week. She also spoke with his teammates, whom she describes as "concerned for his health."
Crosby’s teammates are concerned for his health, but try to keep things on a need-to-know basis. But the unspoken question is this: What if Crosby’s career is permanently altered from its star trajectory because of the concussion?...“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about it,” Penguins defenseman Matt Niskanen told The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “There is always that scare, guys out there like Marc Savard, who probably aren’t coming back. It’s always a possibility.”
In a time when the NHL is struggling, losing Crosby would be a serious blow. But right now, we have to wonder if we will ever see Crosby lace his skates in the NHL again.
