Jets owner Woody Johnsonprefers to start Greg McElroy over Mark Sanchez on Sunday against the Jaguars, Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News reports.
But two powerful people in the organization — general manager Mike Tannenbaum and offensive coordinator Tony Sparano — want to start Sanchez, according to Mehta.
McElroy led the Jets to a 7-6 win over the Cardinals last week after Sanchez was ineffective through three quarters.
Now the Jets have a full-fledged QB controversy involving a one-time franchise QB (Sanchez), a former phenomenon (Tim Tebow), and an unproven back-up who rallied his team to a win in his only action this season (McElroy).
It's unclear which direction Rex Ryan will go. According to Mehta, Ryan hasn't received any ultimatum and the decision will be his, despite the opinion of his boss.
Given Sanchez's contractual situation, it's understandable that the Jets would give him every opportunity to remain the starting QB. He's guaranteed $8.25 million in 2013, so the team has a financial stake in him eventually figuring it out.
But Sanchez ranks near the bottom of the league in most statistical categories, including QB rating, where he's 32nd. And it'd be hard to keep starting him if he continues to consistently struggle in the last quarter of the season.
