The NCAA committee on infractions has penalized Ohio State with a one year bowl ban and the loss of nine scholarships over three years, The Columbus Dispatch reports.
The ruling also includes a "show-clause" penalty against former coach Jim Tressel — meaning any school that hires him is also subject to sanctions.
A lot of people thought Ohio State would avoid serious penalties for the tattoos-for-memorabilia scandal that cost Tressel his job earlier this year. So these penalties are considered harsh.
The Buckeyes will not be eligible for any bowl after the 2012 season — including the national championship game.
It's a tough start to Urban Meyer's tenure.
