The NFL has already seen three of its 32 head coaches fired this season, including Jack del Rio of the Jaguars, Tony Sparano of the Dolphins, and Todd Haley of the Chiefs.
And in an age when owners need teams to win sooner, rather than later, we could see several more sacked after the season ends.
But are any of these guys among the worst head coaches in recent memory?
Criteria for this list (all data via Pro-Football-Reference.com):
- A coach had to start his head coaching career in the 1980s or later.
- He had to coach at least 16 games.
- A coach was eliminated if his teams made it to the playoffs more than once.
- The coaches were than ranked by overall winning percentage. However, more weight was given to coaches that sucked over long periods (e.g. a .210 winning percentage in 10 seasons is worse than a .200 winning percentage in 2 seasons).
#10 Dick LeBeau
Record: 12-33 (.267)
Teams: Cincinnati Bengals
Lowlights: LeBeau is the current defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers. But for three awful seasons he was the head coach in Cincinnati. His teams never won more than six games and he was fired after going 2-14 in 2002.
#9 Dan Henning
Record: 38-73-1 (.342)
Teams: Atlanta Falcons, San Diego Chargers
Lowlights: Henning was most recently the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins. But he has also twice served as a head coach, including four seasons with the Falcons and three with the Chargers. In seven seasons, Henning's teams lost at least ten games five times, and never won more than seven games in one season.
#8 Rick Venturi
Record: 2-17 (.105)
Teams: Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints
Lowlights: Venturi is the unlucky member of this list, having twice served as an interim coach for awful teams. With the Colts in 1991, he coached the final 11 games going 1-10. And in 1996, he took over and went 1-7. But losing may have been natural for Venturi. In three seasons as the head coach at Northwestern, his teams went 1-31-1. So his total record as a head coach was 3-48-1. Amazing.
